There’s no denying that flooring makes a massive impact on any interior design. Not only is it functional, but flooring sets the tone for the overall look of the space. The material, color, shape, and texture all play a role in how flooring will impact the design’s final look.

Just like any aspect of interior design, flooring trends come and go, and with 2023 drawing to a close, experts are looking ahead to the New Year and the trends that are set to be big among homeowners.

If the predictions are accurate, it looks like next year will be the year of the tile. Here are 8 flooring trends that are set to make a splash in 2024, according to design experts.

    Natural and Light Wood

Natural and light wood tones for flooring have been trending for a few years now and design experts say that’s not set to change in 2024.

“We’re seeing many clients embrace unstained white oaks for a natural, neutral foundation that can seamlessly embrace a variety of design aesthetics—from organic minimalist to traditional edge,” says Heather Goerzen, design director at Havenly.

Chelsea Potthast, founder of Potthast Design based in St. Petersburg, Florida, agrees that natural, warm wood tones in particular will continue to be popular.

Hardwood floors are timeless and always on-trend, but if hardwood isn’t within your budget don’t be afraid to opt for engineered hardwood, or even a realistic-looking laminate option to get the look.

    Wide Plank Hardwood

We’ve seen plank wood flooring get increasingly wide as the years go on, and in 2024, it's set to get wider still. Jessica Dorling, owner and principal designer of Dorling Design Studio, predicts that extra wide 10-inch plank flooring will become more popular in the New Year.

“This contemporary design in hardwood draws inspiration from European design, adding a sense of freshness to interiors,” Dorling says.

    Checkerboard Tile

Checkerboard tile is a classic tile design that has been slowly making its way back into favor over the past few years. In particular, 2023 saw a huge boom in popularity that is set to continue into 2024.

While classic black and white will always be in style, expect to see checkerboard patterns played out in a variety of different softer tones as well, says Samantha Stathis Lynch, founder and principal designer of Samantha Ware Designs.

Thinksoft white marble paired with classic gray Carrara. Goerzen agrees, adding that more organic iterations like warm neutrals and terra hues are likely to pop up in the New Year as well.

    Terrazzo

Already enjoying a surge in popularity over the past couple of years, terrazzo is a versatile material that can be used for countertops, flooring, tiles, and more. It can either be poured in place for a larger slab look or precast and cut into tiles for more intricate designs.

“I think we will see even bigger, bolder terrazzo patterns with larger chunks of aggregate taking center stage," says Kara Pipermeyer, Los Angeles-based interior designer and founder of Studio Kosma. "I’m looking forward to seeing more colorways and combinations—I can’t wait to create playful checkerboard patterns with the new bold terrazzo styles.”

    Patterns

Designers agree that we can expect patterns to be big in both tile and wood flooring in 2024. Not necessarily colorful pattern designs, but the way the tile and wood planks are laid.

Think herringbone, basketweave, and chevron arrangements, Potthast says. While patterned flooring has been popping up all over the home, Potthast predicts that it’ll be especially popular in entryways and other smaller areas of the home.

    Mosaic Tile

Another classic tile design to make its way back to the mainstream is mosaic tile and it's only set to increase in popularity come the New Year.

According to Dorling, mosaic tile is a great choice if you are looking to add some individuality and charm to your space. It can also be a great option for retro or vintage designs. Mosaic tile can be completely custom or installed using pre-set sheets of tile for an easier and more affordable installation.

    Natural Stone

When it comes to flooring, the desire for natural materials extends beyond wood, and includes natural stone options as well. An ever-popular and timeless choice, marble will continue to be a top contender for natural stone flooring choices in the New Year.

While the slab look has been trending lately, it’s not an accessible option for many, so expect to see large format tile take center stage instead, says Caroline Kopp, founder and principal designer of Caroline Kopp Interior Design.

Slate is another natural stone that designers expect will be popular in 2024. Similar to marble, expect to see it applied in large format tiles for a sleek and polished look, says Dijana Savic-Jambert, co-founder and principal designer of MAREDI Design.

While real slate offers undeniable character and charm, don’t be afraid to opt for a slate-look porcelain tile instead of the real thing, Savic-Jambert advises. Porcelain offers unrivaled water resistance and requires less upkeep, making it a more suitable option for many homeowners.

    Terracotta Tile

Goerzen also predicts that terracotta tile will continue to be big over the next year.

“Between our collective obsession with an organic modern aesthetic alongside the return to more traditional touches, terracotta tiles are a great solution for a range of design expressions," she says. "They simultaneously read timeless and fresh, collected and unfussy, artisanal and cool."

Plus, they are available in endless different shades, shapes, and textures for a truly one-of-a-kind look every time.
